I have
heard about changing the lower balljoints in E Types and early XJ saloons
to the later sealed style. Is this something you recommend?
A
Absolutely,
yes. This is something we do on all of our cars. The later style balljoints
are much stronger and due to their sealed construction, much more durable.
Q
Is it
an easy installation? Do I need any special tools?
A
If anything,
it is easier to install the later style of sealed lower balljoint than
it is to go back with the original multi-piece unit. The sealed unit does
not require the use of any shims. The only thing that you will have to
do is to knock out the sleeve that rests in the bottom of the suspension
upright prior to inserting the new balljoint into position (see thumbnail
photograph with the sleeve circled).
Q
Can I
be penalized at a concours event for having installed the later style of
balljoint?
A
In North
America, no. Under JCNA rules you will not be judged on the lower balljoints.
In any event, once installed, they are virtually invisible.
