FAQ - Vacuum advance and retard distributors..........

We are often asked about differences between the vacuum advance and vacuum retard distributors commonly used in Jaguars. The most commonly asked question is simply how to identify which vacuum unit you have installed in your particular car. Hopefully the following information will be of some assistance.

In the first instance, as a general rule, almost all series 2 E types will be equipped with a Vacuum Retard Distributor. The vacuum retard unit is Lucas # 544 22 224

With the vacuum retard units, the vacuum nipple will be on the distributor side of the unit.

It is of course entirely possible that a given car may have had its distributor swapped for a vacuum advance unit.

The distributor turns anti-clockwise. If the advance plate also moves anti-clockwise, it is a retard unit. If the advance plate moves clock-wise, it is an advance unit.
